A Star is Born (2019): Always Remember Us This Way

The original scores, a sensitive performance by the lead actors, and a tight screenplay kept me awake through the night.

Bradley Cooper's directorial debut, A Star is Born, delivered a powerhouse performance from Cooper and Gaga, in a complete reversal of roles: Gaga as Ally is the underdog striving to shine and Cooper, playing Jackson Maine, the aging country rock musician who has rode the wave and is struggling to hold on to his fading fame, complicated by his struggle with tinnitus, alcoholism and love for Ally, who is becoming a larger than life star

The struggles are real.

Cooper has adapted the remake with a beautiful blend of pop and rock in a contemporary setup. He demonstrates clear vision in what he wants the audience to feel with an evocative performance. His deep blue eyes and raspy, alcohol consumed vocals have been used to perfection. A little research reveals that he invested over a year training with professionals for his vocals and guitar to deliver a natural performance. It just goes on to prove that with hard work and commitment, what one can achieve is limitless.

I have never listened to Gaga, but her raw voice and natural talent coming through in her performances is shocking. Gaga's range of vocals and styles gives us an opportunity to appreciate her lengthy list of achievements. It is well deserved.

To her credit, the singer tackled the challenge of her role quite well. This is an actor who is debuting on screen and is a platinum selling artist in real life, who was required to shed her stardom and bare her soul. It requires a respect for the director's artistic sensitivity and diving into your pain to deliver a convincing performance. Interestingly, the story about Gaga's rise portrayed in the movie is true. She was not considered good looking and did not get her break without a struggle.

Bradley Cooper has involved real characters to keep the performances authentic. Charlie, is his dog who trained with him on the sets. The movie also highlights ear problems such as tinnitus that are common among rock musicians who have been exposed to blaring speakers over a long period of time. It can be depressive as it progresses. His character Jackson Maine who falls in love with his protege hopelessly, the jealousy, and insecurity as she transforms to a super star have been beautifully handled.

Throughout the movie, in life and in death, and moving on, the intimate bond between Cooper and Gaga rules. Lady Gaga's voice keeps you spellbound and ties the story line perfectly.

Far from Shallow, they will Always Be Remembered This Way.
